Founded in 1750 by Simon Verry, Chanson Père & Fils is one of the oldest of Beaune’s good négociants. The Chansons' took control during the 19th century with a background from owning plots in Beaune, Savigny and Pernand. The company was sold to Bollinger in 1999 and in 2002 they appointed Gilles de Courcel as CEO and Jean-Pierre Confuron as winemaker.

Beginning with the vineyards which are now ploughed and no longer fertilised, the new team has made major improvements and the domaine vineyards are now organic. 50% of the stems are used for their reds and the wine is vinified using 100% whole clusters to extract a deeper colour and enhance the structure and aromatic complexity. The majority of their wines, from Village to Grand Cru, see about 30% new oak during maturation giving a unique opportunity to compare the terroir across the range.

We recently tasted their new 2017 vintage and this is how we scored them.

Chanson Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2017
94	Aroma had plenty of ripe cherries, darker currants, forest floor, vanilla, oak and subtle smoke. Over the palate came succulent cherries, currants, vanilla, oak, light leather, wild strawberries, and smoke. Medium acidity, medium tannins and dry. Very elegant.

Chanson Beaune 1er Cru 'Clos des Fèves' (Monopole) 2017
92	Aroma had succulent cherries, raspberries, currants, herbs, oak, smoke and light scents of forest floor. Over the palate came ripe cherries, forest strawberries, pepper, oak, smoke, herb garden and leather. Medium acidity, medium tannins and dry.

Chanson Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru 'Les Suchots' 2017
93	Aroma had succulent cherries, ripe forest strawberries, currants, cloves, and oak. Over the palate came cherries, currants, forest floor, oak, light smoke and ripe strawberries. Medium acidity, medium tannins and dry.

Chanson Gevrey-Chambertin 1er cru La Perrière 2017
93	Aroma had succulent cherries, oak, smoke, peppery notes, and currants. Over the palate came succulent cherries, black currants, oak, smoke, licorice, light leather and herbs. Medium acidity, medium tannins and dry.

Chanson Clos Des Mouches Beaune 1er Cru 2017
90	Aroma had currants, forest strawberries, herb garden, oak and smoke. Over the palate came cherries, forest strawberries, vanilla, oak, light smoke and herbs. Medium acidity, medium tannins and dry.

Chanson Pernand-Vergelesses Les Vergelesses 1er Cru 2017
92	Aroma had cherries, currants, oak, smoke, tobacco leaves, and herbal hints. Over the palate came cherries, currants, oak, smoke, herbs, leather and licorice. Medium acidity, medium plus tannins and dry.

Chanson Vosne-Romanée 2017
90	Aroma had plenty of cherries, currants, forest strawberries, oak and leather. Over the palate came cherries, currants, vanilla, oak, light smoke, plums, and forest floor. Medium acidity, medium tannins and dry.

Chanson Gevrey-Chambertin 2017

Chanson Santenay Premier Cru Beauregard 2017
89	Aroma had forest strawberries, currants, cherries, raspberries, and light oak. Over the palate came cherries, currants, forest floor, vanilla and oak. Medium tannins, medium acidity and dry.

Chanson Corton Grand Cru 'Les Vergennes' Blanc 2017
93	Aroma had grapefruit, vanilla, minerals, mirabelle, white flowers and lemons. Over the palate came succulent citrus, grapefruit, oak, light licorice, minerals and smoke. Medium acidity, low tannins and dry.

Chanson Chablis Grand Cru 'Les Preuses' 2017
90	Aroma had grapefruit, peach, tangerine, orange peel, lime and white peach. Over the palate came grapefruit, peach, light apricot and lime. Medium acidity, low tannins and dry.

Chanson Beaune Premier Cru Clos Des Mouches Blanc 2017
92	Aroma had candied lemons, light apricot, toasted nuts, and licorice. Over the palate came grapefruit, lemons, oak, candied lemons and minerals. Medium acidity, low tannins and dry.

Chanson Pernand-Vergelesses Premier Cru Les Caradeux Blanc 2017
89	Aroma has minerals, grapefruit, oak, yellow apples, and white flowers. Over the palate came grapefruit, minerals, white peach, light to medium oak and subtle licorice. Medium acidity, low tannins and dry.

Chanson Chassagne-Montrachet Premier Cru Les Chenevottes 2017
92	Aroma had licorice, oak, smoke, grapefruit, orange ppel, nutty notes, and white peach. Over the palate came a tight grip of acidity, grapefruits, oak, licorice and white peach. Medium plus acidity, low tannins and dry.

Chanson Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru Les Folatières 2017
92	Aroma had lemons, sour grapefruit, oak, minerals, kiwi, forest floor, and white flowers. Over the palate came grapefruit, oak, licorice, minerals, apricots, and sour peach. Medium plus acidity, low tannins and dry.

Chanson Meursault Premier Cru Charmes 2017
91	Aroma had peach, vanilla, oak, nuts and grapefruit. Over the palate came plenty of acidity, oak, nuts, grapefruit and candied lemons. Medium plus acidity, low tannins and dry.

Chanson Meursault 2017
89	Aroma had grapefruit, plenty of oak, nuts, green hazels, and white peach. Over the palate came grapefruit, exotic fruit, oak, nuts and minerals. Medium acidity, low tannins and dry.

Chanson Montagny Premier Cru 2017
89	Aroma had grapefruit, oak, minerals, subtle notes of apples, and hints of licorice. Over the palate came minerals, grapefruit, licorice, oak and white flowers. Medium plus acidity, low tannins and dry.
