Champagne - Bouzy

12 August 2017

The village of Bouzy lies in the Montagne de Reims' region and is a wonderful 100 % Grand Cru village. The area is dominated by the Pinot Noir grape with less than 15 % being Chardonnay and a bit of Pinot Meunier. Bouzy is also known for being one of the few places in champagne where still redwines are also produced due to their outstanding Pinot Noir terrior.

We spend a day in Bouzy in late May where we had the pleasure of visiting two top notch champagne producers (amongst others) Paul Bara and Camille Savés.

Paul Bara is a more than 170 years old vinery and today a Special Club producer as well.

Brut Réserve - 80% Pinot Noir and 20% Chardonnay
89 Fresh and lively aroma with notes of bright lemon and vanilla. Dry flavor with lemons, good acid bite and white floral notes.
Grand Rosé de Bouzy - 80% Pinot Noir and 20% Chardonnay
89 Beautiful pale red colour with a fruit punch in the nose. Well balanced with hints of strawberries and redcurrent. Nice persistent mousse. That distinctive Pinot Noir spice shining through, also. Very good example of a rosé.
Brut Millésimé 2008 - 90% Pinot Noir and 10% Chardonnay
90 Yellow in colour with green specs. Very elegant in the nose and on the palette. Light, fresh fruity notes shines through of peaches, strawberries, and white flowers. Underneath a hint of fresh honey.
Special Club 2006 - 70% Pinot Noir and 30% Chardonnay
91  Clear, straw-yellew colour. Very potent nose with hints of candied fruits and apricot- and orange jam. Very harmonic on the palette with tastes of riped light stonefruits and brioche. Lovely mousse and great structure.

Camille Savés is also an old Champagne House that consistantly scores highly amongst ratings. We understood why, when we visited, even if we were somewhat challenged by the language barrier as the hosts speak only French.

Cuvée Brut Carte d'Or - 75% Pinot Noir and 25% Chardonnay
90 Stunning non-vintage wine. Potent plowers and strawberries in the nose. Beautiful minerality and structure on the palette with tastes of citrus fruits, stonefruits and orange peel.
Cuvée Brut Prestige - 65% Chardonnay and 35% Pinot Noir
91 Another impressive Non-Vintage. Very refined with great minerality and structure. Mirabelle and rose petals in the nose and flavours of brioche, plums, strawberries, and light, ripe fruits.
Cuvée Brut Millésime 2009 - 80% Pinot Noir and 20% Chardonnay
92 Beautiful acidity and structure. Very well balanced with red fruits coming through distinctively and well rounded. A very rich wine with brioche and fruit bouquets in nose and mouth. Lovely mousse.
