The estate is located in Heppingen (Ahr) and it was founded in 1920 by Peter-Josef Schäfer. Today it is run by his grandson Paul-Josef Schäfer and his wife Gitta, supported by the sons Paul-Michael, Heiko and Andreas. The vineyards cover 15 hectares in the Burggarten (Heimersheim), Schieferlay and Sonnenberg (Bad Neuenahr) and Ursulinengarten (Ahrweiler). 70% is Pinot Noir, and Cabernet Sauvignon, Domina, Dornfelder, Frühburgunder, Merlot, Portuguese, Regent and Zweigelt, and the white varieties Riesling and Pinot Gris. Burggarten also cultivates Riesling in Piesport at Goldtröpfchen in the Mosel region, where Riesling wines are made. It is operated in near-natural viticulture with integrated crop protection. Some of the wines are matured in traditional barrels, and the best in years, up to three years in barriques.
