2018 - The Eiswein Year?
04 December 2018
The 2018 harvest in Germany have shown wonderful promise for this year's vintage. Particularly healthy, well ripened grapes after another warm summer in Germany have inspired winemakers to take on the risky business of declaring Eiswein.
This year, 628 producers in Rheinland-Pfalz alone have announced that they intend to make Eiswein and therefore leaves an amount of grapes on the vine. Last year, the number was a mere 24. Ahr, Mosel, Middle Rhein, and Pfalz are also declaring Eiswein this year in high amounts.
The high amount of Eiswein declarations is a testimony not only to the great vintage of 2018, but also to the innovative and ambitious spirit of German winemakers today.
It will be interesting to see if the prices will follow. Regardless, we certainly look forward to a hopefully record-breaking Eiswein year and cross our toes and fingers that the winemaker's bet with nature turns out in their favour.
