The estate is located in Heppingen in the Ahr and was founded in 1920 by Peter-Josef Schäfer. Today, it is run by his grandson Paul-Josef Schäfer and his wife Gitta, supported by their sons Paul-Michael, Heiko, and Andreas.
The vineyards cover 15 hectares in Burggarten in Heimersheim, Schieferlay and Sonnenberg in Bad Neuenahr, and Ursulinengarten in Ahrweiler. Around 70 percent is planted with Pinot Noir, alongside Cabernet Sauvignon, Domina, Dornfelder, Frühburgunder, Merlot, Portugieser, Regent, and Zweigelt, as well as the white varieties Riesling and Pinot Gris.
Burggarten also cultivates Riesling in the Piesporter Goldtröpfchen vineyard in the Mosel region, where Riesling wines are produced. The estate works with near-natural viticulture and integrated crop protection. Some of the wines are matured in traditional barrels, while the best wines in good years are aged for up to three years in barriques.
